Accounting and tax firms

Defensible positions, not plausible ones.

Research, calculation, workpapers and review inside one case file — with the authority behind every position on the record, the reviewer's sign-off captured, and the final pack made immutable.

The engagement

The work is not the answer. It is proving the answer.

Any tool can produce a number. What takes the hours is tying it out, sourcing the position, writing it up so a reviewer can follow it, and being able to defend it two years later when the enquiry letter arrives.

  • Tie-out eats the engagement

Reconciling the figures back to source is where the margin goes, and it is the part that cannot be skipped because it is the part a reviewer checks first.

  • Positions need authority, not consensus

A position supported by what everybody knows is a position with nothing behind it. The section reference is the work product, and finding it is most of the research time.

  • Review notes go round twice

A reviewer asks where a figure came from, the preparer reconstructs it, and the answer lands in an email rather than in the file where the next reviewer will look.

  • Last year's memo is a liability

A carried-forward position that was right for the prior year and is not right for this one is the most expensive kind of mistake, because nobody re-reads a memo that already looks finished.

  • Nobody will sign an unattributable number

If the file cannot say which rule produced a figure, the figure cannot be relied on — and a principal who signs it anyway is carrying the risk personally.

  • Reconstruction is impossible after the fact

By the time a query arrives, the guidance has been updated, the software has been patched, and the person who did the work has moved on.

What the product does

The case file is the product.

Not a chat window beside your workflow — the case, its workpapers, its positions and its sign-off are the thing the system is built around.

  • Cases and workpapers

A case carries its facts, its positions, its calculations and its supporting documents in 9 standard workpaper folders, so a file opened by someone else looks like a file they already know.

    9 standard workpaper folders.

    Cases and workpapers
  • Research that cites the section

Answers point at the specific passage in an in-force authority, not at a document title. A citation that names the act without naming the subsection is not a citation a reviewer can use.

Every legal claim cites a specific section of a real official document.

    Research and citations
  • A reviewer gate that is real

A reviewer must be assigned before a case can be finalised. Not a checkbox on a form — a state the case cannot leave without one.

No journal entry posts without an accountant approving it.

  • Journal entries as proposals

Every generated entry starts at needs-review and balances in exact decimal before anyone sees it. Nothing reaches the ledger without a person accepting it.

Balanced double-entry, with a mandatory approval step.

    Bookkeeping and journals
  • Memos and notices from verified claims only

Drafting pulls from the claims that were actually supported in the case. A memo cannot assert something the file does not carry.

  • Immutable finalisation

A finalised case cannot be edited. Reopening it is an explicit action, written to the audit log with who did it and when.

A full audit trail records who did what, and an auditor role has read-only access to it.

The engagement, end to end

Your workflow, not a workflow.

Intake through to the client-ready pack. Each stage produces something the next one needs, and every stage can stop — which is the same discipline you already apply to a file you are willing to sign.

  1. 01

    Client intake and document collection

Engagement scope, entity details and the document request list. Uploads are scanned, EXIF-stripped and extracted into facts rather than filed as attachments nobody opens again.

  2. 02

    Fact gathering

The case assembles a checksummed snapshot of the entity and filing-status facts. A fact that is missing is asked for by name — it is never inferred to keep the workflow moving.

  3. 03

    Research with citations

Answers use the law in force on the date in question, so a superseded provision is never cited as though it were current.

  4. 04

    Calculation

Figures come from exact calculation and a versioned parameter dataset, in exact decimal. The bracket breakdown is part of the output, not something reconstructed afterwards for the file.

  5. 05

    Workpaper assembly

Facts, positions, calculations and sources land in the standard folders as the work happens, rather than being collected into a file at the end when the detail has already been lost.

  6. 06

    Bookkeeping and journal review

Proposed entries balance in exact decimal and sit at needs-review until an accountant accepts them. The ledger is hash-chained per tenant, so a later change to an accepted entry is detectable.

  7. 07

    Review and sign-off

The reviewer sees the position, the authority behind it and the verification status of every claim — and the sign-off is recorded against the case rather than in an email thread.

  8. 08

    Finalisation and the client pack

The case becomes immutable and the pack is generated with its recorded versions attached. Reopening is possible, explicit, and audited.

What firms actually check

Two things, and they are the two that matter.

Everything else on this page is a convenience. These are the two capabilities that decide whether the output can be relied on in a professional context — and both are structural rather than procedural.

  • Any answer can be replayed on the build that produced it

Every answer pins its sources and versions. Two years later the same question runs against the same versions and returns the same figure — which is the difference between a defensible position and a remembered one.

Every answer records the sources it used, so it can be checked and reproduced later.
  • A finalised case does not change quietly

Finalisation makes the case immutable. Reopening it is a deliberate action written to the audit log alongside case finalisation, deletion and every other high-risk event, with the actor and the recorded versions recorded.

A full audit trail records who did what, and an auditor role has read-only access to it.
  • Last year's law cannot leak into this year's file

Answers use the law and rates in force for the date in question. A provision that was not yet in force on the law-as-of date is not available to be cited or applied, so a carried-forward position cannot quietly go stale.

A 2023 question is answered with 2023 law.
  • It says when it cannot answer, and why

Outside declared coverage the assistant abstains and names the specific fact or coverage that is missing. An abstention in a file is worth more than a plausible number, because it is the one that does not have to be defended.

An answer ships only when it is verifiably certain — otherwise it asks a specific question or escalates to a human, with a stated reason.
The hard questions

Your liability, addressed here rather than on a call.

These are the questions a principal asks in the first ten minutes. Answering them on the page rather than in a sales conversation is the only honest way to do it.

For practices

Bring one engagement and check the file.

Not a demo of a happy path — a real matter, worked through to a pack, so you can look at what a reviewer would actually see and decide whether it holds.

Decision support, not tax advice. A professional reviews before anything is filed.
