Bangladesh income tax help: e-TIN, e-return and rebates

Bangladesh income tax help starts with the income year, which runs from 1 July to 30 June. Individuals with a TIN usually file their return with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) by Tax Day, 30 November, and many can file online through the e-return system. TaxOrch helps you estimate tax, check rebates and track NBR deadlines.

e-TIN and e-return

A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is issued online through the NBR's e-TIN system. Many services require one, and having a TIN generally means you must file a return each year.

  • e-TIN: register online with your NID and mobile number.
  • e-return: file online through the NBR's e-return portal, with statements of assets and liabilities and of living expenses where required.
  • Acknowledgement slip: keep proof of submission; it is often asked for by banks and employers.
  • Proof of Submission of Return (PSR): needed for many services such as larger loans and some licences.

Upload your salary certificate, bank statements and investment certificates to TaxOrch and it lists what the return needs. See document upload.

Investment tax rebate

Individuals can reduce their tax through an investment rebate on eligible investments and donations, such as savings certificates, DPS, life insurance premiums, approved provident funds and listed shares. The rebate is limited by your taxable income, your actual eligible investment and a maximum amount set in the Finance Act. TaxOrch applies the limits for the income year you ask about. Freelancers and IT-enabled services

Freelancers report their income on the individual return. Certain income from IT-enabled services has had exemptions or reduced rates, subject to conditions such as receiving payment through banking channels. These rules have changed between Finance Acts, so TaxOrch checks the conditions for the year you ask about before treating any income as exempt.

  • Receive foreign payments through banking channels and keep the bank certificates.
  • Keep invoices and contracts for each client.
  • Record any tax deducted at source by clients or banks.

VAT for businesses

Bangladesh VAT is administered by the NBR under the VAT and Supplementary Duty Act, 2012, with a standard rate of 15% and reduced rates for some supplies. Businesses above the registration threshold register for a Business Identification Number (BIN); smaller businesses may fall under turnover tax. TaxOrch checks the threshold for the year you ask about.
